Before you start

The programme accepts individuals, clubs, schools, businesses and community groups. It can support a small one-time effort or an ongoing site-care commitment. Pick the activity you can sustain rather than promising a broad cleanup without a plan.

The four programme choices have different tasks. Street adoption covers boulevards, sidewalks, cul-de-sacs or storefronts, subject to safety restrictions. Park/trail/dike adoption includes litter removal, invasive-plant work and maintenance reporting. Garden adoption concerns planting and maintaining unused public greenspace, with city help for plans and materials.

Rules and exceptions

  • Some streets are restricted because of safety concerns. Do not assume an application approves work in traffic lanes or on every site.
  • Wait for confirmation before starting the project. The city may provide litter kits, site preparation and guidance.
  • One-time litter-kit loans contain 25 pickers and gloves. Availability is not guaranteed by this guide.
  • After the work, use the programme report form. Sign recognition requires four or more reports each year for at least two years.
  • Garden adoption is not the same as an allocated food-growing plot in the separate community-garden programme.
