Before you start

All resident owners must register dogs older than eight weeks. The city permits up to three dogs in a one- or two-family dwelling and two in a multiple-family dwelling unit. A licence belongs to the licensed dog and is non-transferable; fees are non-refundable.

The 2026 page reports a postal disruption and a special early-payment extension through May 31. That date is now past, so this guide does not offer the early rate as available in October. The page’s standard March 1 tables remain shown above to explain the fee categories. Confirm the actual amount in the current renewal invoice.

Rules and exceptions

  • Provide spay/neuter documentation at first licensing to receive that rate. Previously documented dogs do not need the proof resubmitted at renewal.
  • Renewal requires the account number and access code. If the notice is missing, email DogLicence@richmond.ca with the account number, tag number or mailing address to request the code.
  • New registrations may be submitted online or with the printed form to City Hall. Cash is not accepted at City Hall; online payments use Visa or Mastercard.
  • Update the account for an address, owner or contact change. Cancel it when the dog dies, is given away or the owner moves out of Richmond.
  • A new decal is mailed after outstanding fees are paid. Use the current visible licence when visiting off-leash areas.
  • The source has inconsistent renewal-mailing month references. Do not rely on a promised mail date; use the online account or request help if no notice arrives.
