Before you start

The permission applies to a marked activity area, not the whole park. The city provides a PDF map for each of the four sites. Choose the right park and use that zone map before setting up a stove or barbecue. A normal picnic lawn is not automatically a cooking area.

Fuel rules are separate from picnic seating, event permits and shelter access. This guide does not grant an exclusive picnic booking or reproduce live fire restrictions. A posted restriction or site closure must be respected even at a normally permitted gas-cooking area.

Rules and exceptions

  • Do not use charcoal briquettes, wood, open flame campfires or solid-fuel stoves in Richmond parks or on beaches.
  • Natural-gas and propane cooking is prohibited at every other park and elsewhere inside the four listed parks.
  • Pop-up shelters are seasonal, mid-May through September, not a promise of cover for an October picnic.
  • The parks-system page sets ordinary public hours at 5 a.m.-11 p.m., unless other hours are posted.
  • If the boundary map is unclear, ask the parks service before placing cooking equipment outside it.
