Who we are
The British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (“BCCNM”) is the college empowered under the Health Professions and Occupations Act to regulate the practice of all licensed practical nurses, nurse practitioners, registered midwives, registered nurses, and registered psychiatric nurses in British Columbia. Regulation helps to protect the public by ensuring that professional care or service received by the public is competent, ethical, and meets the standards that society views as acceptable.
As western Canada’s largest health profession regulator, we believe a diverse and inclusive team enriches our efforts to protect the public. We welcome applications from all who reflect of the communities we serve and especially encourage Indigenous Peoples and members of equity-seeking groups to apply. We believe diverse perspectives and experiences bring both innovation and better outcomes to the work we do and the decisions we make.
BCCNM’s commitment to Indigenous Specific Anti-Racism
BCCNM is committed to working with Indigenous Peoples and health system partners to support Indigenous-specific anti-racist practices in the health system. As the largest health regulator in Western Canada, BCCNM has the opportunity to influence the health professionals we regulate, as well as the broader health-care system, to break the cycle of racism, and improve health outcomes for Indigenous Peoples. BCCNM has pledged to become culturally safe and anti-racist, and to support the health professionals we regulate to do the same.

Documents findings, identifies recurring gaps or variations in practice, implements or recommends corrective action, and follows up to confirm identified issues have been addressed.
- Reviews and approves investigative reports and other substantive materials before they are advanced to the Director, I&I, Registrar, Registrar delegate, or Investigation Committee, and provides feedback to ensure that the evidence is accurately summarized, material issues are addressed, analysis is neutral and supportable, and the file is complete for decision-making.
- Guides Investigators in the appropriate use of investigative authorities and methods, including information gathering, production and information orders, interviews, expert opinions, review of clinical and other records, site-based investigative activity where authorized, and other statutory investigation powers under the HPOA.
- Identifies and escalates urgent or emerging public-protection risks in accordance with established escalation pathways, and works with the Director, I&I, Registrar, Regulatory Legal Services, Intake, and other relevant teams on matters that may require interim measures, identity protection, legal advice, expedited investigation, or other immediate regulatory action.
- Supports Investigators in difficult communications and interviews with complainants, reporters, licensees, witnesses, employers, counsel, and other parties, and promotes trauma-informed, culturally safe, respectful, and procedurally fair investigative practice.
- Prepares, reviews, or supports reports and presentations for the Registrar and Investigation Committee and assists with matters proceeding to the Health Professions Review Board, discipline process, or other external review.
