Job Description:
About the Job
- We're looking for an Intermediate Mechatronics Engineer to join our Robotics & Grasping team, the team that turns vision into products that pick and place on the factory floor and makes automation simple and a joy to implement.
- This is a hands-on, hardware-first role at a company in the middle of its transition from software-only to software plus hardware. You will have a strong mechanical and electrical foundation, be comfortable writing Python to run quick tests, and read and contribute to C++.
- You will work alongside senior mechatronics engineers and professional engineers (P.Eng.), as well as vision, software, and product teams, using the latest machine vision technology to design and build complete industrial vision-guided robotic cells, from initial concept sketches to production.
- You will also own a key piece of hardware. Our proprietary 3D vision cameras serve as the eyes of every system: built from off-the-shelf 2D machine vision cameras, assembled in-house, and calibrated to deliver high-fidelity, high-accuracy 3D perception. You will maintain and improve the calibration methods and system behind them to keep delivering the most accurate 3D perception in the industry.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and improve calibration methods and calibration systems for proprietary 3D vision cameras, including supporting fixtures, targets, and tooling.
- Research, prototype, and benchmark new calibration methods and metrology techniques, bringing validated solutions into production.
- Drive the physical design, iteration, and manufacturing of next-generation vision cameras, covering enclosures, optics/camera mounting, thermal and sealing considerations, assembly fixtures, and production processes.
- Write and maintain robot drivers in C++ and Python connecting internal software to ABB, Fanuc, Yaskawa, Universal Robots, and other robot brands.
- Tune motion profiles, cycle time, and vision-to-motion timing to optimize robotic cell efficiency, accuracy, and reliability.
- Execute mechanical and electrical design for full industrial cells, including end-of-arm tooling, mounts, fixtures, camera enclosures, cell layouts, cell safety, wiring, and panel design.
- Script test experiments in Python to evaluate accuracy, repeatability, and cycle time in the lab, converting test data into design decisions.
- Support the full product lifecycle from prototyping and design-for-assembly (DFA) through supplier coordination, documentation, and production handoff.
- Diagnose field issues, execute root-cause analysis, and collaborate with software and vision teams to implement system-wide fixes.
Requirements
- 3–6 years of hands-on mechatronics, robotics, or automation engineering experience.
- Degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or a related engineering discipline.
- Strong mechanical design skills using CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred), including tooling, fixtures, enclosures, assemblies, GD&T, and design-for-manufacturing (DFM).
- Direct experience taking hardware products from prototype to production (DFM/DFA, supplier coordination, assembly documentation).
- Solid electrical design and integration skills, including wiring, sensors, motor/actuator selection, panel layout, basic PLC/IO, and industrial cell safety standards.
- Proficiency in Python for test automation scripting, data analysis, and tooling development.
- Working proficiency in C++, with the ability to read, debug, and contribute to large codebases.
- Strong practical prototyping, experimental testing, and technical documentation abilities.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Ability to work onsite at the Vancouver office and lab.
Preferred Skills
- Experience building or maintaining camera calibration pipelines.
- Familiarity with 2D machine vision hardware, lenses, industrial lighting, and optics.
- Experience developing robot drivers or working with robot OEM SDKs and real-time communication protocols.
- Familiarity with ROS/ROS 2, motion planning frameworks, or kinematics.
- Hands-on programming and API integration experience with industrial robots (ABB, Fanuc, Yaskawa, Universal Robots, etc.).
- Working understanding of calibration fundamentals (intrinsics, extrinsics, stereo vision, hand-eye calibration, TCP calibration, and error stack-up quantification).
- Experience with field deployment, commissioning, or industrial bin-picking applications.
